Strontium Dog #2

Strontium Dog first appeared in the British science fiction anthology comic 2000 AD in 1978, emerging from the creative vision of writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra. The series was designed to explore a dystopian future where nuclear fallout had mutated a portion of the human population into outcasts, who were forced to work as bounty hunters for the 'Search/Destroy' agency. This specific issue builds upon the gritty, satirical world-building that defined the early years of 2000 AD, leaning into the cynical yet charismatic personality of the lead character, Johnny Alpha.

The aesthetic of Strontium Dog was heavily influenced by Carlos Ezquerra’s distinct visual style, which favored textured, expressive linework that perfectly complemented the harsh, lawless environments of the comic. Upon its release, the series was received with considerable acclaim for its blend of high-concept science fiction and western archetypes. It quickly became a staple of the British comics landscape, solidified by a loyal readership that resonated with the themes of institutional prejudice and the morality of the societal outcasts presented in the narrative.
