Where it came from
Sumitai Machi, translated as 'The City I Want to Live In,' is a niche manga series that explores urban planning, community architecture, and the emotional connection residents forge with their local environments. The second issue continues the series' exploration of mid-sized Japanese urban landscapes, utilizing a restrained, observational art style that prioritizes atmospheric detail over dramatic action.
The series was conceived as a meditation on the rapid modernization of Japanese suburbs during the early 21st century. Through its illustrative approach, the creative team aimed to document the quiet beauty found in mundane intersections, public parks, and neighborhood shopping streets, receiving modest acclaim from critics who appreciated its gentle pace and commitment to architectural realism.
