Superman/Batman #33

Published in 2007, Superman/Batman #33 serves as the opening chapter of the 'With a Vengeance' storyline, a meta-narrative arc written by Joe Kelly with art by Ed Benes. Emerging during a period when the series was known for high-concept, multi-dimensional team-ups, this issue explores the complex dynamic between the titular heroes as they navigate a reality-bending conflict orchestrated by Bizarro and other rogue elements. The narrative is heavily stylized to reflect the era's preference for widescreen, action-heavy storytelling, aiming to contrast the ideological rigidity of Batman with the moral optimism of Superman.

The creative direction for this arc focused on the duality of power and control, utilizing a visually striking aesthetic characteristic of Ed Benes’ work for DC Comics at the time. The issue was received as a quintessential example of the mid-2000s comic book approach, balancing intricate plot threads with the spectacle of two of the medium's most iconic characters. By focusing on the tension within their partnership, the team sought to deepen the thematic weight of their ongoing collaboration beyond the standard villain-of-the-month format.
