The Amazing Spider-Man #12

The Amazing Spider-Man issue 12, published in May 1964, emerged during the fertile early years of the Marvel Age of Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, this issue introduced the character of Doctor Octopus, who would go on to become one of Spider-Man's most enduring and significant antagonists. The story represents a pivotal moment in the series as it solidified the formula of placing Peter Parker’s grounded personal struggles alongside the high-stakes drama of superhero combat.

Steve Ditko’s design for Doctor Octopus was notably grounded and menacing, moving away from the more fantastical archetypes common in superhero fiction at the time. By equipping the villain with four mechanical tentacles, Ditko created a visually striking and formidable challenge for Spider-Man that demanded a shift in the hero's fighting style. The issue was well-received by readers of the era, further cementing the creative team's reputation for crafting complex villains who were often mirror images of the protagonist's own intellectual and social vulnerabilities.
