Where it came from
The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #5, published in 1968, serves as a significant milestone in the Spider-Man mythos, primarily because it delivers the long-awaited origin story of Peter Parker's parents. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Larry Lieber and Mickey Demeo, the issue aimed to expand the character’s emotional depth by exploring the mystery surrounding Richard and Mary Parker. This narrative choice was designed to ground Peter’s heroism in a legacy of espionage and sacrifice, marking a departure from the purely accidental nature of his powers.
The issue is noted for its ambitious storytelling and the distinct artistic shift compared to the core monthly series. Upon release, it was well-received by fans eager for back-story, and it remains a staple for collectors of the Silver Age. The collaboration between Lee and the creative team effectively blended traditional superhero tropes with the spy-thriller elements popular in late 1960s pop culture, cementing the Annual as a key piece of early Marvel history.
