Where it came from
Published in 1998 by Vertigo, an imprint of DC Comics, The Books of Magic #50 serves as a significant milestone in the long-running series created by Neil Gaiman. The title originally spun out of Gaiman's 1990 miniseries, which introduced Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's greatest mage. This fiftieth issue reflects the dark, philosophical tone established by the Vertigo editorial team, focusing on the character's ongoing struggle to balance his humanity with his immense magical potential.
The issue features art by Peter Gross and writing by John Ney Rieber, who took over the series' reins to navigate Tim Hunter's evolution into his teenage years. This era of the series was lauded for its maturity and its commitment to blending contemporary urban life with complex occult themes. It occupies a unique place in the landscape of late 1990s creator-driven comics, maintaining the atmospheric, cerebral narrative style that Vertigo became famous for during that decade.
