The Books of Magic #46

The Books of Magic #46, published in 1998, is part of the long-running Vertigo series that spun out of Neil Gaiman’s original 1990 miniseries. By this point in the publication history, the series followed the protagonist Timothy Hunter as he navigated the complex and often darker edges of the DC magical universe. The issue fits into the mid-run narrative arc, maintaining the series' reputation for exploring mature themes through the lens of urban fantasy and mythological exploration.

The creative direction during this era of the series emphasized a balance between traditional comic book storytelling and the more avant-garde sensibilities that defined the Vertigo imprint. Artists and writers contributing to this period were tasked with evolving Timothy Hunter’s character from a wide-eyed boy into a more disillusioned adolescent, reflecting the broader stylistic shifts occurring within dark fantasy comics of the late nineties. While it remains a niche entry compared to the initial miniseries, it is respected by collectors for its role in maintaining the narrative continuity of the Vertigo magical canon.
