The Defenders #119

Published in May 1983, The Defenders #119 represents a transitional period for the title as it moved toward the team's later 'New Defenders' era. Written by J.M. DeMatteis with interior art by Don Perlin, the issue continues the team's ongoing search for identity and cohesion while navigating the complex supernatural and cosmic threats typical of the series. The narrative focuses on the core roster attempting to manage their internal tensions against the backdrop of an ever-shifting Marvel Universe landscape.

The visual direction of this era was defined by Don Perlin’s work, who served as a primary artist for the series for several years. His style was instrumental in grounding the often abstract and otherworldly adventures of the Defenders, providing a consistent aesthetic that managed the large, rotating cast of characters. The issue was received by readers of the time as a continuation of the book's long-standing reputation for eccentric team dynamics and unconventional storytelling that set it apart from mainstream superhero titles like The Avengers.
