The Defenders #122

The Defenders #122, published in August 1983, serves as a mid-run installment in a series known for its unconventional roster and rotating creative teams. By the early 1980s, the title had moved away from its original premise of three foundational heroes and embraced a more fluid, experimental ensemble dynamic that allowed writers to explore darker, more mystical narratives within the broader Marvel universe.

This specific issue features the work of writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Don Perlin. Perlin, who provided a long-standing visual identity for the team during this era, focused on maintaining a grounded tone despite the surreal threats the group frequently faced. The issue is characteristic of the period's editorial style, balancing episodic superhero action with the evolving interpersonal tensions that became a signature of the series under DeMatteis's tenure.
