Where it came from
The Defenders #120, published by Marvel Comics in June 1983, serves as a significant turning point in the series' history. Following a long-running departure from the team's original 'non-team' roots, this era saw the title leaning into more grounded interpersonal drama and experimental storytelling under the creative guidance of writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Don Perlin.
The issue features the iconic cover art by Al Milgrom and continues the narrative arc that saw the team evolving into a more formalized superhero unit. During this period, the Defenders were transitioning toward the 'New Defenders' status quo, a shift that drew mixed reactions from long-time readers who were accustomed to the revolving-door membership model established by creators like Roy Thomas and Sal Buscema in the early 1970s.
