The Defenders #144

Published by Marvel Comics in 1985, The Defenders #144 arrived during the twilight years of the original series' run. The title, which began in the early 1970s as a platform for unconventional team-ups, was navigating a period of creative transition as the editorial team sought to wrap up long-running subplots before the title's eventual cancellation at issue #152. This specific issue features the creative talents of writer Peter B. Gillis and artist Don Perlin, who were tasked with maintaining the series' reputation for exploring cosmic and mystical stakes that set it apart from mainstream superhero narratives of the era.

The cover and interior art reflect Don Perlin's distinct, textured style, which defined the visual identity of the title throughout the mid-1980s. The design and narrative direction aimed to balance the character-driven ensemble drama that long-time readers expected with the increasing pressure to transition the team toward the roster shifts that characterized Marvel's editorial strategy at the time. While issue #144 is often viewed by collectors as a transitional chapter, it is appreciated by historians of the medium for its commitment to the sprawling, psychedelic, and sometimes grim storytelling that characterized the Defenders' final years.
