Where it came from
Published in July 1985, The Defenders #145 marks a significant point in the history of the series as it nears its conclusion with issue #152. Written by Peter B. Gillis and illustrated by Don Perlin, this era of the book explored the surreal and cosmic nature of the team, distancing itself from the traditional superhero team-up format to embrace a more experimental, metaphysical narrative style.
The creative direction under Gillis focused on a revolving cast of unconventional characters, reflecting a shift in Marvel's editorial strategy during the mid-eighties to allow writers more creative freedom on lower-tier titles. While the series was nearing cancellation at this stage, it remains a cult classic among fans of bronze-age experimentation, celebrated for its unique character dynamics and the distinct, gritty artistic sensibilities of Don Perlin.
