The Fall of Ultraman #1

The Fall of Ultraman #1, published by Marvel Comics in 2020, marked a significant milestone as the first collaboration between Marvel and Tsuburaya Productions to bring the storied Japanese tokusatsu hero to the American comic book market. Conceived as a reimagining of the original 1966 series, the title was written by Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom with art by Francesco Manna, aiming to introduce Ultraman to a new generation of readers while honoring the gravity and spectacle of the source material.

The design and narrative approach sought to ground the giant hero in a more modern, intricate world, emphasizing the geopolitical and personal costs of kaiju attacks. Critics and fans largely welcomed the issue for its polished aesthetic and its success in distilling the core essence of the Ultraman mythos—the balance between human fragility and god-like duty—into a fresh, serialized format that felt both nostalgic and innovative.
