The Fury of Firestorm #21

The Fury of Firestorm #21, published in March 1984, arrived during a pivotal period for the character as DC Comics sought to solidify Firestorm’s place in the broader superhero landscape. The issue was written by Gerry Conway, who had been instrumental in shaping the character's voice since his debut, and features interior art by Rafael Kayanan. This era of the series is noted for moving away from the more experimental tone of the late 1970s toward a traditional, ensemble-driven superhero narrative that leaned heavily into the interpersonal dynamics of Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein.

The design and narrative direction of this issue reflect the mid-1980s shift toward mature, character-focused storytelling at DC. Kayanan’s illustrations during this run brought a consistent, clean aesthetic that helped ground the character’s volatile elemental powers within a suburban American context. While the issue served as a standard entry in the ongoing monthly serial, it is frequently cited by collectors for its contribution to the slow-burn world-building that eventually led to the character's later prominence in the Justice League and his elevated status within the DC Universe.
