The Great Yokai War: Guardians #1

The Great Yokai War: Guardians #1 serves as a companion piece to the 2021 Japanese supernatural film directed by Takashi Miike, which itself acts as a modern reimagining of the 1968 classic. Published to coincide with the film's theatrical release, the comic book series was developed to expand upon the rich mythology of Japanese folklore, specifically focusing on the intersection between ancient spirits, or yokai, and contemporary threats to humanity.

The visual direction for the comic mirrors the film's aesthetic, which blends traditional creature designs with modern cinematic sensibilities. By distilling the complex lore of the yokai into a serialized narrative format, the publication sought to capture a younger generation of readers while paying homage to the enduring cultural legacy of the yokai genre. Its reception has been largely confined to enthusiasts of Japanese fantasy and those interested in the cross-media expansion of Miike's filmography.
