Where it came from
The Immortal Doctor Fate #1 was published by DC Comics in 1985 as part of a three-issue limited series. This title emerged during a period of transition for the publisher, following the conclusion of the seminal Crisis on Infinite Earths, which allowed creators to revisit and redefine legacy characters. The series focused on Kent Nelson, the original Doctor Fate, as he navigated the mystical burdens of the Helmet of Nabu, attempting to re-establish his role in a changing DC Universe.
The series was written by Keith Giffen and illustrated by Keith Giffen and penciller Kevin Maguire. The creative team aimed to ground the ethereal, high-fantasy elements of the character within a more somber, psychological framework, leaning into the cost of immortality and the toll of serving as an agent of Order. While the series is now regarded as a cult classic for its exploration of Fate's isolation, it was received at the time as a bold, experimental departure from the character's traditional superhero roots.
