The Incredible Hulk #147

Published in January 1972, The Incredible Hulk #147 stands as a notable entry in the Bronze Age of Marvel Comics. The story, titled 'The Monster and the Madman,' was written by Roy Thomas and featured pencils by Herb Trimpe, a long-time fixture on the Hulk title whose gritty, powerful rendering of the character helped define the visuals of the era. The narrative continues the internal struggle of Bruce Banner, balancing the tragic nature of his transformations with the mounting threats he faced within the expanding Marvel Universe.

This issue captures the transitional period of the early 1970s, where storytelling shifted toward more introspective and complex character studies. Herb Trimpe, having taken over the series in the late 1960s, was instrumental in establishing the Hulk’s specific physicality and the desolate, often surreal environments he inhabited. The issue was received as a consistent piece of the Hulk’s ongoing saga, appreciated by contemporary readers for its commitment to the established continuity that Roy Thomas was meticulously maintaining across various Marvel titles at the time.
