Where it came from
Published in July 1981, The Incredible Hulk #261 was released during a transitional period for the character, falling within the long-running tenure of writer Bill Mantlo. This issue is part of a narrative arc that explores the dual nature of Bruce Banner and the Hulk, reflecting Marvel Comics' broader efforts at the time to ground their superhuman figures in complex, often tragic, psychological struggles.
The issue features cover art and interior illustrations by Sal Buscema, a definitive artist for the Hulk who was known for his ability to convey the character's immense power and inherent pathos. Buscema's aesthetic during this era focused on heavy inks and expressive facial features, aiming to balance the high-stakes action expected of the superhero genre with the melancholic tone that became a hallmark of the title throughout the early 1980s.
