The Incredible Hulk #249

Published by Marvel Comics in July 1980, The Incredible Hulk #249 represents a transitional period in the character's long-running series. During this era, writer Bill Mantlo continued his definitive work on Bruce Banner, balancing the character's internal psychological torment with the high-stakes action expected of the Bronze Age of comics. The issue features interior art by Sal Buscema, a legendary artist whose distinct style helped define the Hulk’s visual language throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The cover art, provided by Al Milgrom, captures the aggressive and desperate aesthetic that characterized the title during the late 1970s and early 1980s. As part of a series that had become a cornerstone of Marvel's output, this issue reflects the publisher's strategy of maintaining continuity while exploring new interpersonal dynamics for Banner. It was received by readers as a reliable entry in the ongoing saga, upholding the standard of character-driven storytelling that solidified Mantlo’s tenure as one of the Hulk's most significant creative voices.
