The Incredible Hulk #358

Published in 1989, The Incredible Hulk #358 represents a pivotal moment in the character's publication history during the celebrated run written by Peter David. At this time, the narrative was transitioning away from the grey-skinned 'Joe Fixit' persona, exploring the complexities of the Hulk's split identity within the established continuity of the Marvel Universe. The issue serves as a bridge, grounding the fantastical elements of the character in the gritty, noir-inspired atmosphere that David became known for during his long tenure on the title.

The artwork for this issue is provided by Jeff Purves, whose distinct, jagged, and somewhat surreal illustrative style helped define the tone of the book during the late 1980s. Purves’s character designs sought to emphasize the raw, monstrous physicality of the Hulk rather than the more conventional superhero aesthetic of the era. The issue was received well by contemporary critics and readers, who praised the series for its character-driven storytelling and the tonal consistency maintained by the creative team throughout this period.
