The Incredible Hulk #354

The Incredible Hulk #354, published in March 1989, emerged during a pivotal era for Marvel Comics where the character underwent a distinct transformation under writer Peter David. This issue serves as a key chapter in the 'Joe Fixit' period, a time when the Hulk was characterized by a gray-skinned, cunning, and cynical persona operating primarily in Las Vegas. The narrative tone shifted toward gritty crime drama and psychological intrigue, distancing the series from the traditional 'monster' tropes that defined earlier iterations of the character.

The interior art was provided by Jeff Purves, whose idiosyncratic, expressive style was a departure from the more polished superhero aesthetics of the late eighties. His work on this series is frequently noted for its raw, kinetic energy, which complemented Peter David’s nuanced character development. While the issue was part of a larger ongoing experiment to reinvent the Hulk's identity, it remains a notable example of how creative teams in the late 1980s successfully pushed the boundaries of established comic book archetypes by blending noir elements with classic Marvel action.
