Where it came from
The Incredible Hulk #355, published in 1989, arrived during the long-running tenure of writer Peter David, a period widely celebrated for evolving the character from a simple monster into a complex psychological study. This issue sits within a narrative arc that explores the integration of Bruce Banner's fractured personalities, specifically highlighting the synthesis of his intellect and his strength as the 'Grey Hulk' persona.
The interior artwork was provided by Jeff Purves, whose kinetic and slightly distorted style was a departure from traditional superhero house styles of the late 1980s. Purves’s work focused on emphasizing the Hulk’s internal turmoil and physical weight, a design choice that served the darker, more introspective tone David was establishing for the series at the time.
