Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in July 1981, The Legion of Super-Heroes #277 represents a significant moment in the series as it features the work of writer Gerry Conway and artist Steve Ditko. The issue was released during a period when the title was transitioning into a more mature, complex narrative style, moving away from its silver age origins to address themes of political intrigue and intergalactic tension within the 30th-century setting.
The creative direction for this era focused on elevating the character development of the sprawling Legion roster. Steve Ditko's distinct, angular illustrative style brought a unique visual tension to the pages, which was met with interest by fans who were accustomed to the more traditional house style of DC's superhero line. This issue is often cited by collectors as a notable example of Ditko's short but impactful tenure on the title, capturing a specific aesthetic shift during a pivotal creative window for the team.
