Where it came from
The Legion of Super-Heroes #287 was published by DC Comics in May 1982, arriving during a pivotal era for the franchise. By the early 1980s, the Legion had evolved from a secondary feature into a cornerstone of the DC universe, benefiting from the sophisticated long-form storytelling popularized by writers like Paul Levitz. This specific issue reflects the series' transition into the 'Baxter format' era, where complex character-driven arcs replaced the episodic nature of earlier decades.
The interior art was provided by Keith Giffen, whose distinct, angular style helped modernize the Legion's aesthetic. His work on this title is widely cited by enthusiasts for its dynamic panel layouts and experimental page compositions, which were designed to mirror the vast, futuristic scale of the 30th-century setting. The issue was received well by the core fanbase, who appreciated how the creative team balanced intense cosmic stakes with the intricate personal relationships of the diverse teenage super-hero team.
