Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in September 1983, The Legion of Super-Heroes #303 represents a transitional period for the title during the early 1980s. Following the immensely popular 'Great Darkness Saga,' the series continued to explore the complex, interconnected history of the 30th-century super-team. This issue sits within the run written by Paul Levitz, who was instrumental in grounding the futuristic, sprawling cast of characters in more personal and political stakes, a signature approach that defined his long-standing tenure on the title.
The interior art was provided by Keith Giffen, a visionary artist known for his dynamic, multi-panel layouts and a gritty, sophisticated aesthetic that distanced the series from the campier tone of earlier Silver Age adventures. His work during this era helped solidify the Legion's identity as a prestige space opera. Received well by readers who appreciated the narrative depth and the sophisticated character growth, this issue remains a representative example of the mature storytelling direction that DC pursued under editor Jack C. Harris.
