Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in 1986, The Omega Men #37 serves as a significant milestone in comic book history as the first appearance of the character Lobo. Conceived by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, the character was intended as a satirical take on the popular gritty, hyper-masculine anti-heroes that were beginning to dominate the comic landscape of the mid-1980s.
The creative team utilized the interstellar setting of the Omega Men series to introduce Lobo as a czarnian bounty hunter, exaggerating common tropes of the era such as extreme violence and stoicism to highlight the absurdity of the genre. While the character was initially presented as a villainous mercenary, the unique aesthetic design and cynical tone resonated with readers, eventually leading to his evolution into a breakout anti-hero throughout the 1990s.
