Provenance

Where it came from

Published by DC Comics in November 1983, The Omega Men #9 is widely recognized by comic historians for marking the first appearance of the character Lobo. Conceived by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, the Omega Men series was intended as a space-opera ensemble piece, but this particular issue introduced the intergalactic bounty hunter as a villainous, cigar-chomping parody of the hyper-masculine anti-heroes prevalent in 1980s action media.

The character design by Giffen was deliberately exaggerated, intended to serve as a satirical take on the gritty archetypes of the era. While Lobo was initially depicted as a relatively standard antagonist for the Omega Men, the subversive nature of his design and his dark, chaotic personality eventually resonated with readers, leading to his evolution into one of DC's most popular and long-running cult characters throughout the 1990s and beyond.
