The Pink Panther #43

The Pink Panther #43 was published in the late 1970s by Gold Key Comics, a division of Western Publishing that held the license to translate the popular animated feline from television and film into a print format. These comics were part of a broader trend of expanding successful cinematic intellectual properties into serial media, aimed at a younger demographic who were captured by the character’s pantomime style and jazzy aesthetic.

The interior art for the Gold Key run typically utilized the house style of Western Publishing’s contracted illustrators, who sought to translate Friz Freleng’s fluid animation character designs onto the static page. While the comic books were produced in high volume as mass-market newsstand items, they are now primarily viewed by collectors as nostalgic artifacts of 1970s commercial graphic design, reflecting the mid-century modern influence still present in the character’s original visual identity.
