The Pink Panther #42

Published by Gold Key Comics in the late 1970s, The Pink Panther #42 emerged during the peak of the character's popularity as a staple of Saturday morning television and theatrical shorts. Following the success of the 1963 film and subsequent animated sequences by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, Gold Key secured the licensing rights to bring the sly, silent protagonist to the medium of print. The comic aimed to replicate the visual gags and slapstick humor that defined the character on screen, translating cinematic physical comedy into sequential panel layouts.

The creative direction of the series leaned heavily on the whimsical, surreal aesthetic established by animator Friz Freleng. The artists tasked with the interiors sought to capture the character's signature cool demeanor through minimalist line work and high-contrast color palettes typical of the era's budget-conscious comic production. While these issues were primarily marketed to a younger demographic and distributed through newsstands, they have since gained a modest following among collectors who appreciate the transitional period of comic book licensing during the final years of the Gold Key imprint.
