The Pink Panther #45

The Pink Panther comic series was published by Gold Key Comics beginning in 1971, emerging as a spin-off of the successful theatrical shorts and the animated television series. Issue #45, released in the late 1970s, reflects the brand's transition toward younger audiences, prioritizing slapstick visual humor and wordless, pantomimed narratives that mirrored the character’s screen persona. These comics served as a low-cost, accessible extension of the studio's popular media franchise during a period when animated tie-ins were a staple of the American newsstand market.

The interior artwork for the Gold Key run was produced by a rotating team of studio artists who adhered to the established visual language of Friz Freleng’s animations. By the time of the middle-to-late issues like #45, the design had settled into a standardized aesthetic that emphasized clear, expressive character posing and minimal dialogue to maintain the spirit of the original films. While these comics were often viewed as ephemeral entertainment for children, they are now appreciated by archivists for maintaining the consistent visual identity of the Pink Panther character throughout the decade.
