Where it came from
The Pink Panther #7 was published by Gold Key Comics in 1975, emerging during the peak of the character's popularity in animation. Following the success of the 1963 film and the subsequent animated shorts, Gold Key licensed the property to translate the visual gags and slapstick humor of the panther into a print medium. The series was designed to appeal to a broad demographic of younger readers who were already familiar with the character through television syndication.
The comic's aesthetic adhered to the clean, minimalist lines of the original DePatie-Freleng animation style, focusing on silent, pantomime-style storytelling. Artists working on these Gold Key issues faced the challenge of translating Friz Freleng's rhythmic, music-driven pacing onto static pages. The series was generally well-received by fans of the cartoon as a faithful extension of the franchise, cementing the panther's status as a staple of 1970s pop culture merchandise.
