Where it came from
The Savage Sword of Conan issue number 17, released in 1977, was a core installment in Marvel Comics' black-and-white magazine line designed to present Robert E. Howard’s barbarian hero with a more mature, unrestrained tone. Unlike the traditional color comic books of the time, this magazine-sized format allowed for more visceral storytelling and detailed illustrations that bypassed the restrictive Comics Code Authority, catering to an older readership that favored gritty sword-and-sorcery fantasy.
The cover art for this specific issue was crafted by Boris Vallejo, an artist renowned for his lush, highly detailed depictions of fantasy figures and dramatic anatomical precision. Vallejo’s contribution to the series helped define the visual language of 1970s Conan, emphasizing the raw power and otherworldly atmosphere of the Hyborian Age. The issue was well-received by fans of the genre for maintaining the high aesthetic and narrative standards established during the early years of the magazine’s successful run.
