The Savage Sword of Conan #16

The Savage Sword of Conan #16, published by Marvel Comics in 1976 under its Curtis Magazines imprint, emerged during a peak period for the black-and-white sword-and-sorcery magazine format. As part of a series intended for a more mature audience than the standard color comics, this issue utilized high-quality paper and detailed illustrative work to capture the gritty atmosphere of Robert E. Howard’s original prose, helping to cement the character's status as a cornerstone of 1970s pop culture fantasy.

The interior art for this issue featured work by industry legends such as John Buscema and Ernie Chan, whose collaborative efforts were instrumental in defining the visual aesthetic of the character during this era. Their approach emphasized muscular, dynamic figures and lush, shadowed environments, which allowed the artists to move beyond the constraints of the Comics Code Authority. The title was received as a definitive iteration of the genre, appreciated for its sophisticated storytelling and commitment to the dark, visceral tone established by Howard.
