The Thing: The King of Yancy Street #1

The Thing: The King of Yancy Street #1 was published in 2005 as a limited series centered on Ben Grimm, one of the foundational members of the Fantastic Four. The story was crafted by writer Evan Dorkin and artist Dean Haspiel, who sought to bridge the character's modern status as a celebrity with his humble, gritty origins in the Yancy Street neighborhood of the Lower East Side. This narrative exploration focuses on the cultural legacy of his upbringing and the weight of his public identity.

Dean Haspiel’s art style provides a distinct, grounded aesthetic for this title, favoring expressive, slightly raw linework that complements the melancholic tone of the script. The series was well-regarded by critics and fans for shifting the focus away from cosmic superhero conflicts toward a more intimate, character-driven examination of Grimm’s humanity. It stands as a notable example of a comic book miniseries that prioritizes atmosphere and psychological depth over traditional action tropes.
