Where it came from
The Thing from Another World: Eternal Vows, published by Dark Horse Comics in 1994, serves as a canonical narrative expansion of the 1982 John Carpenter film. Produced during a period when Dark Horse was heavily invested in adapting and continuing cult classic horror properties, this four-part miniseries was designed to explore the unsettling aftermath of the film's conclusion. It was crafted to maintain the tension and paranoia established by the source material while delving deeper into the biomechanical horror of the creature.
The series was written by Chuck Pfarrer, who brought a cinematic sensibility to the script, and illustrated by Tim Hamilton. The creative direction aimed to capture the stark, claustrophobic atmosphere of the Antarctic setting, emphasizing the creature's shifting morphology through detailed, grotesque linework. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the original film who appreciated the effort to remain faithful to the aesthetic of Rob Bottin’s practical effects and the film's bleak tone.
