Where it came from
The Untold Legend of the Batman was a three-issue limited series published by DC Comics in 1980, intended to provide a cohesive, updated origin story for Batman during a period when his complex history had become fragmented across decades of publication. Written by Len Wein with pencils by John Byrne and inks by Jim Aparo, the series was designed as a bridge between the character's early Golden Age roots and the more grounded sensibilities of the Bronze Age, serving as a definitive primer for newer readers.
The second issue specifically focuses on the tragic murder of Bruce Wayne's parents and his subsequent transformation into the Dark Knight. Byrne’s clean, cinematic visual style contrasted effectively with the brooding atmosphere of the narrative, and the series was generally well-received by fans and critics alike for successfully streamlining Batman's sprawling continuity into a singular, accessible retrospective.
