Where it came from
The Unexpected #212, published by DC Comics in August 1981, arrived during a transitional period for the publisher's long-running supernatural anthology series. As the market for traditional horror comics shifted, the title struggled to maintain its footing after decades of showcasing eerie tales of the macabre and the supernatural, eventually leading to its cancellation shortly after this issue.
The cover art and interior stories for this period were produced by a rotating team of creators who leaned into the pulp horror aesthetic that had defined the title since its 1968 inception. The series was designed to offer bite-sized, atmospheric stories that played with irony and cosmic dread, a formula that had been a staple of the DC mystery stable but found itself increasingly sidelined as superhero narratives began to dominate the industry.
