The Unexpected #214

The Unexpected was a long-running anthology series published by DC Comics, rooted in the tradition of the company's mid-century supernatural and mystery titles. Issue #214, released in the summer of 1981, arrived during a transitional era for DC as it began to experiment with the format of its established horror and suspense books. This period often saw the integration of gothic themes with the more kinetic, character-driven storytelling that defined late Bronze Age comics.

The title relied on a rotating creative team typical of anthology formats, featuring stories that favored twist endings and eerie atmospheres. The artwork of this era often leaned into the dramatic chiaroscuro style synonymous with classic horror comics, designed to provoke a sense of unease in the reader. While these titles were eventually phased out as the market shifted toward superhero-centric narratives, they remain significant for their influence on the darker, more mature genre experimentation that would follow at DC in the 1980s.
