Where it came from
Thundercats issue 16 was published by Marvel Comics under their Star Comics imprint in 1987. The series was designed to capitalize on the immense popularity of the animated television show, which debuted in 1985. The comic served as an expanded medium for the show's lore, allowing the writers to delve deeper into the mythology of Third Earth and the struggles of Lion-O and his companions against the forces of Mumm-Ra.
The creative team for the series typically aimed to maintain the high-energy, action-oriented tone of the animated series while adapting to the conventions of 1980s superhero comics. Like many licensed titles of the era, the art and narrative were produced in a rapid production cycle to keep pace with the show's broadcast schedule. While the comic was primarily marketed to younger readers and franchise fans, it remains a nostalgic artifact of the Saturday morning cartoon era.
