Where it came from
Ultimate Fantastic Four #37, published in January 2007, represents a notable crossover within the Marvel Ultimate imprint. Written by Mike Carey with artwork by Pasqual Ferry, this issue is best recognized for its pivotal role in the 'Zombies' storyline. It continues the narrative threads established in the popular Ultimate Fantastic Four 'Crossover' arc, which served to connect the grounded, modernized Ultimate universe with the grotesque, alternate reality of the Marvel Zombies.
The creative direction for this series was intended to revitalize the Fantastic Four for a contemporary audience, stripping away decades of continuity to offer a fresh, often darker perspective on the team. Pasqual Ferry’s stylized, fluid illustrations complemented Carey’s script, which focused on high-stakes multiversal travel and survival. Upon its release, the issue was well-received by fans of the imprint who appreciated the shift toward horror-themed science fiction, solidifying the 'Marvel Zombies' concept as a significant sub-franchise within Marvel’s wider publishing history.
