Where it came from
Ultimate Fantastic Four #39, released in early 2007, represents a significant turning point in the Marvel Ultimate line's exploration of alternate realities. Written by Mike Carey with artwork by Pasqual Ferry, the issue serves as the conclusion to the 'God War' story arc. The narrative explores the collision of the Ultimate universe with other realities, reflecting the overarching editorial goal of the Ultimate imprint to modernize and reimagine classic Marvel tropes for a contemporary audience without the baggage of decades of established continuity.
The visual design of this issue is notable for Ferry's dynamic, somewhat ethereal aesthetic, which departed from the more grounded, realistic style often associated with the early Ultimate series. This stylistic choice aimed to emphasize the cosmic, high-stakes nature of the conflict involving the Ultimate version of the Fantastic Four. While reception at the time focused on the ambitious scale of the crossover event, the issue is frequently discussed by fans of the imprint for its role in pushing the boundaries of the Ultimate universe's internal physics and its eventual trajectory leading into the events of Ultimatum.
