Where it came from
Ultimate Fantastic Four #40, published in 2007, represents a notable juncture in the Marvel Ultimate Universe, a modern reimagining of classic characters launched in the early 2000s. The issue was written by Mike Carey with artwork by Pasqual Ferry, continuing the series' mandate to reinterpret the Fantastic Four's mythos through a grounded, contemporary lens that often leaned into more mature or experimental science-fiction tropes.
The narrative within this issue fits into the larger 'Godwar' arc, which showcased the high-concept storytelling the Ultimate imprint was known for at the time. Visually, Ferry’s dynamic and fluid character designs were aimed at distinguishing the Ultimate aesthetic from the traditional continuity of the main Marvel Universe, receiving positive feedback for maintaining consistency with the series' established visual tone while expanding its cosmic scale.
