Where it came from
Ultimate X-Men #60, published in 2005, serves as part of the 'Magnetic North' story arc within Marvel Comics' Ultimate line. This imprint was established in the early 2000s to modernize and reinterpret classic superhero origins for a new generation of readers, stripping away decades of continuity baggage. The series sought to present the X-Men in a grounded, grittier reality, focusing on the sociopolitical implications of mutant existence.
The issue features the creative collaboration of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mark Bagley. Bagley, known for his long tenure on Ultimate Spider-Man, brought his signature clean, dynamic aesthetic to the X-Men, aiming to balance high-stakes action with character-driven drama. The story arc was generally received as a pivotal moment for the series, emphasizing Magneto’s ideological conflict with the X-Men and deepening the tensions inherent in the Ultimate universe's version of mutant-human relations.
