Ultimate X-Men #61

Ultimate X-Men #61, published in 2005, arrived during the height of Marvel's Ultimate imprint, which sought to modernize and streamline the long-running X-Men mythos for a new generation of readers. This specific issue is part of the 'Magnetic North' story arc, a pivotal narrative written by Brian K. Vaughan with interior art by Stuart Immonen. The series as a whole was designed to be grittier and more cinematic than the main-line continuity, stripping away decades of dense backstory to focus on contemporary social and political tensions.

Stuart Immonen's clean, dynamic illustrative style in this issue helped define the aesthetic of the Ultimate universe, favoring a grounded, realistic look that contrasted with the more stylized imagery common in the mid-2000s comic market. The issue was generally well-received for its tight pacing and character-driven focus, contributing to the broader critical consensus that the Ultimate X-Men line successfully revitalized the franchise by placing it within a self-contained, high-stakes timeline.
