Where it came from
Ultraforce #3 was published in 1994 as part of the Ultraverse imprint by Malibu Comics, a venture that sought to challenge the market dominance of Marvel and DC by creating a shared superhero universe with a grittier, contemporary edge. This specific issue arrived during a period of intense industry competition, serving as a core title for a publisher that was eventually acquired by Marvel Comics later that same year.
The series was guided by a collaborative effort, with writer Gerard Jones and artists George Pérez and Jeff Whiting shaping the aesthetic. They aimed to blend high-stakes superhero action with complex interpersonal dynamics among a diverse ensemble cast. While the Ultraverse line was initially praised for its innovative coloring and interconnected narrative, it eventually struggled to sustain its momentum following the acquisition, leading to the eventual conclusion of the series.
