Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives! Black & White Special #2

Released in the mid-1990s by Dark Horse Comics, this black-and-white special was part of a broader initiative to revisit classic Universal Studios monsters through the lens of modern comic book aesthetics. During this era, Dark Horse held the license to translate the gothic horror legacy of Universal's film archives into serialized storytelling, aiming to capture the moody, atmospheric tension of the original 1954 film while leveraging the creative freedom of the independent comics market.

The creative direction for this series emphasized a return to the monochromatic roots of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon, eschewing color to highlight high-contrast ink work and shadows. By focusing on the visual texture of the Gill-man, the artists and writers sought to pay homage to the creature's cinematic design while expanding upon its lore. The issue was received as a nostalgic yet stylistic exploration, appealing primarily to horror aficionados and fans of the evolving Universal Monsters multimedia legacy.
