Usagi Yojimbo #19

Usagi Yojimbo #19, published in 1989, is part of the original Fantagraphics Books series that cemented Stan Sakai’s ronin rabbit as a staple of independent comics. Following Miyamoto Usagi's journey through a feudal Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals, this issue reflects Sakai’s transition from early self-published efforts to a consistent monthly format. The story explores themes of honor and social duty, serving as a quintessential example of Sakai's signature blend of chanbara film tropes and meticulous research into Edo-period culture.

Sakai designed the series with a clean, expressive line style heavily influenced by traditional Japanese woodblock prints and the cinematic pacing of Akira Kurosawa’s films. By the release of the nineteenth issue, the series had established a dedicated critical following for its ability to balance lighthearted character dynamics with often grim, somber narrative stakes. The design approach focuses on clarity of motion and historical accuracy, which has contributed to the series maintaining a reputation for artistic consistency over several decades.
