Usagi Yojimbo #2

Usagi Yojimbo #2 was published in 1987 by Fantagraphics Books, continuing the narrative of Stan Sakai’s ronin rabbit, Miyamoto Usagi. This issue arrived during the formative years of the independent comic boom, a period when Sakai’s work began to gain critical attention for its seamless synthesis of Jidai-geki cinema tropes, particularly those of Akira Kurosawa, with anthropomorphic character design. It served to solidify the world-building of an alternate, animal-populated feudal Japan, establishing a distinct tonal balance between meditative historical homage and fluid action sequences.

Stan Sakai both wrote and illustrated the issue, employing a clean, ink-heavy aesthetic that drew inspiration from traditional Japanese woodblock prints and manga masters like Hiroshi Hirata. The design philosophy focused on spatial clarity and kinetic storytelling, moving away from the splash-heavy conventions of mainstream superhero comics. Upon its release, the series was well-received by critics and readers for its cultural research and character depth, eventually earning a dedicated following that appreciated its departure from the era's trendier, grit-focused narratives.
