Usagi Yojimbo #44

Usagi Yojimbo issue #44, titled The Last Request, was published in 1992 as part of the series' run at Mirage Studios. The story follows the rabbit ronin Miyamoto Usagi as he navigates a landscape inspired by Edo-period Japan, blending historical fiction with anthropomorphic characters. Created by Stan Sakai, the series emerged from the independent comics movement of the 1980s, gaining a dedicated following for its meticulous research, kinetic action sequences, and the understated, disciplined nature of its lead character.

Stan Sakai’s design philosophy for the series emphasizes fluid, brush-style linework influenced by both Japanese cinema and traditional woodblock prints. By the time this issue was released, Sakai had established a reputation for balancing lighthearted storytelling with poignant, often somber explorations of bushido code and duty. This particular issue continues his hallmark approach of character-driven narratives, which helped the series garner critical acclaim and multiple industry awards for its consistency and stylistic maturity.
