Usagi Yojimbo #85

Usagi Yojimbo #85, published in 2005 as part of the ongoing series by Stan Sakai, continues the serialized adventures of Miyamoto Usagi, a masterless samurai rabbit in Edo-period Japan. Created by Sakai in 1984, the series is celebrated for its deep integration of Japanese history, folklore, and chanbara cinema tropes. By the time this issue was released, the series had firmly established its reputation for meticulously researched aesthetic detail and fluid, cinematic panel layouts that pay homage to traditional woodblock printing techniques.

The narrative arc surrounding this period of the series exemplifies Sakai's commitment to character-driven storytelling, focusing on the wanderer's moral code amidst a backdrop of political intrigue. Sakai, who serves as both writer and artist, aimed to maintain a bridge between the serialized comic format and the narrative gravity of a samurai epic. The work has been consistently lauded by both critics and peers for its technical consistency and the emotional resonance of its minimalist character designs.
